Standard and Average 2 Car Garage Sizes
There is no official average. These are the sizes builders and garage guides quote most often, measured inside, wall to wall.
| Garage size | Area | Two midsize sedans | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 × 20 ft | 400 sq ft · 37.2 m² | 31 in gaps · 46 in front + back | Minimum: tight for doors and storage |
| 22 × 22 ft | 484 sq ft · 45.0 m² | 39 in gaps · 70 in front + back | Mid-size: doors open, light storage |
| 24 × 24 ft | 576 sq ft · 53.5 m² | 47 in gaps · 94 in front + back | Comfortable: often recommended |
| 24 × 30 ft | 720 sq ft · 66.9 m² | 47 in gaps · 166 in front + back | Oversized: pickups or a workbench |
Area is inside width × inside depth; square meters use the exact foot (0.3048 m). These are typical sizes, not legal requirements: building codes, zoning and HOA rules vary, so check locally before you build.
What Fits in a 2 Car Garage

2 Car Garage Width and Door Sizes
A two-car garage takes one double door or two single doors, and the door layout sets how wide the front wall has to be.
| Door setup | Door size (width × height) | Front wall it needs | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| One 16 ft door | 16 × 7 ft (4.88 × 2.13 m) | 16 ft 8 in | The most common two-car door |
| One 18 ft door | 18 × 7 ft (5.49 × 2.13 m) | 18 ft 8 in | Easier for trucks and wide mirrors |
| Two 8 ft doors | 8 × 7 ft each (2.44 × 2.13 m) | 17 ft 8 in | Pickup mirrors (95.7 in) barely clear 96 in |
| Two 9 ft doors | 9 × 7 ft each (2.74 × 2.13 m) | 19 ft 8 in | A popular single-door width in newer homes |
Front wall = door width plus 4 in of side room for the track on each side, plus a 12 in post between two doors: framing rules of thumb, so check your door maker's installation sheet. For daily parking, installers suggest a garage at least 22 ft wide for two 8 ft doors and 24 ft wide for two 9 ft doors. Doors 8 ft tall are sold for lifted trucks, vans and roof boxes.
2 Car Garage Square Footage vs 1 and 3 Car Garages
Typical ranges. Builders differ by a few feet either way, so treat the edges as soft.
| Garage | Typical sizes | Square footage | Square meters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 car | 12 × 20 to 14 × 24 ft | 240–336 sq ft | 22.3–31.2 m² |
| 2 car | 20 × 20 to 24 × 24 ft | 400–576 sq ft | 37.2–53.5 m² |
| 2 car, oversized | 24 × 30 ft | 720 sq ft | 66.9 m² |
| 3 car | 32 × 22 to 36 × 24 ft | 704–864 sq ft | 65.4–80.3 m² |
Look Beyond the Garage’s Square Footage
Measure the Usable Space Inside
Use clear interior width and depth, not the outside footprint. Measure to a projecting shelf, step or appliance when it limits parking space. Equal floor areas can have very different widths, so check both dimensions.
Check Inside DimensionsCompare Your Two Vehicles Side by Side
Choose a vehicle class for each bay and compare garage sizes. The scaled plan shows the remaining space at the walls and between the vehicles. Classes use representative models; verify the dimensions of your own trim before relying on the fit.
Compare Vehicle FitLeave Room Beside and Around the Cars
A car fitting inside the walls does not mean parking is comfortable. Review side gaps and the combined spare depth at the front and back. The ratings use clearance guidelines; they do not simulate your vehicle’s actual door swing or access needs.
Review the ClearancesCheck the Opening, Not Just the Floor
Compare a double door with two single doors and check the front-wall requirement. Mirror projections are estimates. Measure the clear opening and your vehicle’s mirrors, height and roof accessories separately; this planner does not verify vertical clearance.
Check Door OptionsHow to Check a 2 Car Garage Size
Three measurements beat the square footage on a listing.
- 1
Measure inside, wall to wall
Measure the clear width and depth inside, not the outside of the walls. Take depth from the closed door to the back wall, or to the first step or shelf that sticks out.
- 2
Pick your two vehicles
Enter the size or pick a preset, then choose the two vehicles you park. Check your own model's spec sheet too; trims differ by a few inches.
- 3
Check doors and clearances
Aim for 36 in beside each vehicle and 36 in of spare depth. For two single doors, check the front wall is wide enough and your mirrors clear the opening.
When a 2 Car Garage Size Matters
Building or adding a garage
Start from the vehicles, not the lot. Test your two at 20 × 20 ft and 24 × 24 ft, and leave room for the door layout you want.
Buying a house
A listing may call a garage "2 car" without sizes. Measure it at the viewing and check your own vehicles before you count on it.
Converting part of the garage
Turning a bay into a gym, office or storage room? Keep the parking half workable, and work out the floor area of the part you convert.
FAQ
Questions About 2 Car Garage Sizes
Commonly quoted widths run from 20 ft to 24 ft inside. At 20 ft, two midsize sedans get about 31 in beside each car, so doors open only part way. At 24 ft they get about 47 in, enough to open a door without touching the other car.
Commonly quoted sizes are 20 × 20 ft, 22 × 22 ft and 24 × 24 ft, with 24 × 30 ft for trucks and workshops. There is no single standard; builders and local rules differ.
A 20 × 20 ft garage is 400 sq ft (37.2 m²), 22 × 22 ft is 484 sq ft, 24 × 24 ft is 576 sq ft (53.5 m²) and an oversized 24 × 30 ft is 720 sq ft. For your own garage, multiply the inside width by the inside depth.
No survey we have found measures a true average. The most quoted sizes run from 20 × 20 ft (400 sq ft) to 24 × 24 ft (576 sq ft); many guides call 24 × 24 ft the comfortable size for two midsize vehicles.
20 × 20 ft is the smallest size most guides quote for two cars. It is a convention, not a legal minimum; local codes and HOAs may set their own. At that size a full-size pickup has only 8 in to spare front and back.
At the sizes above it parks, but depth is the problem, not width. A Ford F-150 SuperCrew with 5.5 ft bed is 231.7 in long: a 20 ft deep garage leaves 8 in front and back, 24 ft leaves 56 in. Its mirrors span 95.7 in, so pick 9 ft single doors over 8 ft ones (96 in).
The usual choices are one 16 × 7 ft double door or two 9 × 7 ft single doors. An 18 ft door helps with trucks; doors 8 ft tall clear lifted trucks and roof boxes. For two 9 ft doors, installers suggest a garage at least 24 ft wide.
20 ft works for cars and midsize SUVs. For a full-size pickup, or a workbench on the front wall, aim for 24 ft or more; the 24 × 30 ft footprint leaves a pickup 128 in of spare depth.
