How it’s worked out

  • Width = 65 in × 16 ÷ √337 ≈ 56.65 in
  • Height = 65 in × 9 ÷ √337 ≈ 31.87 in
  • Area = 56.65 in × 31.87 in ≈ 1,805 sq in
  • Center at roughly 42 in (seated eye level) → bottom 26.1 in, top 57.9 in

Visible screen only. Frames add about 1 in to the width and stands add height and depth; both vary by model, so check the spec sheet.

What Size TV for Your Viewing Distance

Measure from your eyes on the sofa to the screen. The range fills 30° to 40° of your view; bigger is more immersive.

Guidelines, not rules: for sports and films many people go bigger, and for a bright or small room smaller. 4K and 8K screens stay sharp at the closer end.

TV Measurements Before You Buy

A TV’s size is the diagonal of its screenFront view of a flat-screen TV on a stand. An arrow runs corner to corner across the visible screen and is labeled screen size. Arrows above and beside the screen mark its width and height. A note points out that the frame is not part of the size.Screen sizeWidthHeightFrameMeasured on the visible screen, not the frame

Width and height from the diagonal

TVs are sold by the diagonal of the screen. On a 16:9 screen the width is about 0.87 × the size and the height about 0.49 ×, so an 85 in TV is 74.1 × 41.7 in of picture.

The right size for your seat

From 8 ft away a 60–80 in screen fills 30–40° of your view; from 10 ft it takes 74–100 in. Sit closer than about 1.2 × the size and the edges leave your view.

Find my TV size
Center the TV over the consoleFront view of a TV on a stand, centered on a wide console against a wall. A dashed center line runs through both, and arrows mark equal space between the edge of the TV and each end of the console.ConsoleCenteredSpaceSpaceCheck the overall width and where the feet sit

Will it fit the wall or console?

The calculator adds 1 in for the frame and finds the largest standard size that fits — on a 60 in console that is a 65 in TV. Check the stand feet too: some sit near the edges.

Check a wall width
Mount the screen near seated eye levelSide view of a person seated on a sofa facing a TV mounted on the wall. A dashed line runs level from the eyes to the center of the screen, and an arrow marks the center height above the floor.Eye levelCenter heightCenter the screen near seated eye level

Mounting height

Seated eye level is roughly 42 in off the floor, so a 65 in TV centered there runs from about 26 in to 58 in. Above a fireplace the screen ends up much higher — tilt it down or pick a smaller size.

How to Choose the Right TV Size

  1. 1

    Measure your seating distance

Measure from where your eyes are on the sofa to where the screen will hang. Enter it in the Viewing distance tab for the size range.

  2. 2

    Measure the wall or console

Measure the width you have, minus any space you want at each side for speakers or decor. The Wall fit tab returns the largest size that fits.

  3. 3

    Check the exact dimensions

Look up the size you like in the TV dimensions tab or the chart, then compare its width with the console and its height with the wall above it.

Planning a Room Around the TV

  • Living room layout

For a 65 in TV, a sofa about 6 ft 6 in – 8 ft 9 in from the screen gives a comfortable view. Plan the walkway behind the sofa before you fix the distance.

  • Open-plan spaces

In an open living and kitchen space the TV wall often decides where the sofa floats. Zone the room first, then size the screen to the seat.

  • Small rooms and bedrooms

A bedroom TV is watched from the bed, often 6–9 ft away. Measure the wall between windows and doors before picking a size.

FAQ

TV Size and Dimension Questions

A 98 in 16:9 TV has a screen 85.4 in wide and 48 in tall (217 × 122 cm). With the frame, allow about 1 in more; check the model’s spec sheet for the stand.

An 80 in TV screen is 69.7 × 39.2 in, or 177.1 × 99.6 cm. Its comfortable seating distance is about 8 ft – 10 ft 10 in.

The screen of a 90 in TV measures 78.4 × 44.1 in (199.2 × 112.1 cm) — wider than most loveseats. Seat it about 9 ft – 12 ft 2 in away.

A 72 in 16:9 screen is 62.8 in wide and 35.3 in tall. Most brands sell 70, 75 or 77 in rather than 72 in, so compare the exact listing.

Yes. The advertised size is the diagonal of the visible screen, corner to corner, without the frame or stand. That is why a TV is always wider than its size suggests is "tall".

Go by seating distance: from 10 ft away, 74–100 in fills 30–40° of your view (75, 77, 80, 83, 85, 86, 90, 97, 98 and 100 in among standard sizes). Then check the width against the wall or console.

About 6 ft 6 in – 8 ft 9 in. That is 1.2 to 1.6 times the screen size, from the THX to the SMPTE guideline.

As low as the mantel allows. Seated eye level is roughly 42 in, and a screen over a fireplace usually starts well above that, so tilt it down and keep the size modest. Check the manufacturer’s heat clearances.
