A traditional approach

What Is a Feng Shui Bedroom Layout?

Feng shui is a traditional Chinese approach to arranging buildings and rooms. In a bedroom it comes down mostly to the bed: the commanding position, where you can see the door from the pillow without lying directly in line with it; a solid wall behind your head; balance on both sides; nothing heavy hanging over the bed; and a calm, uncluttered path from the door.

Many of these rules overlap with plain good planning: you see who comes in, a window at your head brings drafts and early light, and both sleepers can get out of bed without climbing over each other. This generator applies them as layout rules. It makes no claims about health or luck, and it does not cover the bagua map, element colors or personal directions. What you get is a planning image (PNG) with approximate sizes, not a measured plan.

  • Bed in the commanding position, diagonal from the door
  • Headboard on a solid wall, not under a window
  • Balanced nightstands and lamps, no mirror facing the bed
  • Bedrooms, kids rooms, home offices and living rooms

How to Arrange a Bedroom With Feng Shui

  1. Mark the door, windows and walls

Enter the floor area and the wall lengths, then say where the door is and which way it swings, and where the windows, closet and any en suite door sit. Those decide which walls can take the bed.

  2. Name the bed and what goes with it

Give the bed size and list the rest: nightstands, dresser, a chair, a desk if it has to share the room. Mention anything to avoid, such as mirrored closet doors or a radiator under the only free wall.

  3. Generate and check from the bed

Look at the result as if you were lying in bed: can you see the door, is the headboard on solid wall, can both sides get in? Then try the bed on another wall and compare the two versions in My Projects.

The Commanding Position, Worked Out for Your Room

The commanding position is usually on the wall diagonally across from the entrance. In this 12 × 12 ft room the door is in the top-left corner, so the headboard goes on the bottom wall, shifted toward the far side: from the pillow you see the door at an angle, and your feet do not point out of it. The generator works this out from the door and window you describe.

A Small Bedroom Feng Shui Layout That Still Fits

In a small room the best wall often holds the window, or the bed only fits one way. In this 9 × 11 ft room the window takes the short wall, so the headboard goes on the long wall facing the door at an angle, with about 30 in left to walk past the foot of the bed. A full bed (54 × 75 in) instead of a queen gives back 6 in of width and 5 in of length, which can be the difference between balance on both sides and a bed pushed into the corner.

The same idea applies to a desk: sit facing into the room with a view of the door, keep a solid wall behind your chair, and put the window to one side so it does not glare on the screen. Choose Home Office and the desk is placed that way. For a whole office floor with rows of desks and meeting rooms, use the Office Floor Plan maker.

Feng Shui Bed Placement: Do’s and Don’ts

Each traditional guideline, and the everyday reason it still makes sense.

GuidelineDoAvoidPractical reason
Commanding positionBed diagonal from the door, with the door in view from the pillowFeet pointing straight out the door, or the door behind your headYou see who comes in without turning, and hallway light and noise do not land on your face
HeadboardAgainst a solid wall, with a sturdy headboardUnder a window, or on a wall shared with a toiletFewer drafts, less early light and less plumbing noise at your head
BalanceA nightstand and lamp on each side, with 24–36 in of floor beside the bedOne side of the bed pushed against a wallBoth sleepers can get in and out without climbing over each other
MirrorsMirrors inside the closet door or on a wall that does not face the bedA mirror facing the bed, including mirrored closet doorsCatching your own movement in the dark is startling, and a mirror bounces streetlight onto the bed
OverheadA clear ceiling above the bedA beam, a heavy shelf or a ceiling fan directly over the bedNothing can fall on you, and the space overhead feels calmer
Path and clutterA clear path of about 36 in from the door to the bedBoxes stacked under the bed or in the walkwayA clear route is safer at night and the room is easier to clean
FlowThe bed out of the straight line between the door and a window or a second doorThe bed between two doors, or in the path to the bathroomLess draft and less foot traffic past the bed
Work and screensDesk and TV out of sight from the bed, or covered at nightA desk that faces the bedKeeps the bedroom for rest and the glow of screens out of view

Feng shui is a traditional practice, and schools differ on details. The practical reasons are ordinary design advice, not promises of better sleep or luck.

Where to Put the Bed in a Feng Shui Bedroom, by Room Shape

Common situations and the usual answer. Sizes are typical examples; your room may differ.

Room situationExample sizeWhere to put the bedWatch out for
Small square bedroom10 × 10 ft (3 × 3 m)On the wall diagonal from the door, centered between two nightstandsA queen that leaves less than 24 in on a side; a full bed may balance better
Rectangular room, door in a corner12 × 14 ft (3.7 × 4.3 m)The far wall diagonal from the door: the classic commanding positionThe foot of the bed lining up with the doorway
Door in the middle of a long wall11 × 13 ft (3.4 × 4 m)A short wall on the far side, or the opposite long wall offset from the doorNever directly across from the doorway
Window on the best wallAny sizeThe next solid wall with a view of the door; if there is none, a tall solid headboard and heavy curtainsDrafts and early light at your head
Narrow bedroom9 × 12 ft (2.7 × 3.7 m)Headboard on a long wall so the bed spans the width, with the door in viewAt least 24 in between the foot of the bed and the opposite wall
En suite or a second door14 × 16 ft (4.3 × 4.9 m)A wall that sees both doors without lining up with eitherThe bathroom door left open toward the bed
Sloped ceiling or exposed beamAttic bedroomsHeadboard on the tallest wall, with the beam not over the bedA low ceiling right over your head

Keep about 24–36 in (60–90 cm) beside the bed and about 36 in (90 cm) for the main path from the door, whatever the room shape.

Who Uses the Feng Shui Bedroom Layout Generator

  • Moving into a new place

Decide on the bed wall before the movers carry the frame in, while it is still easy to change. Check the room against your bed size first; if the bedroom is smaller than you thought, the full-bed or narrow-nightstand version may be the one that balances.

  • Rearranging the bedroom you have

If you would rather not buy anything, take a wide photo of the room and let Rearrange My Room move your own furniture into a new arrangement. Plan the feng shui version here first, so you know which wall the bed should end up on.

  • Home offices and dorm rooms

A desk follows the same rule as a bed: face into the room, back to a wall. In a dorm the beds rarely move far, but where the desk sits and which bed takes the far wall can still follow the commanding idea.

It is the spot where you can see the door from the bed (or the desk) without lying or sitting directly in line with it, usually diagonally across the room from the entrance, with a solid wall behind you. It is the first rule this generator applies to every bedroom.

On a solid wall diagonal from the door, where you can see the entrance from the pillow, with space and a nightstand on both sides. Avoid the wall under a window, the spot directly in line with the door, and anywhere a beam, a shelf or a mirror sits over or opposite the bed.

Seeing the door from bed is the goal. What tradition avoids is the bed directly in line with the doorway, with your feet pointing out of it. If the room leaves no other choice, a solid footboard or a bench at the foot of the bed is the usual compromise.

Put the bed on the wall diagonal from the door if it fits with about 24 in on each side; if it does not, a full bed or narrow nightstands often restore the balance. Keep the path from the door clear, choose a dresser that fits beside the closet rather than across from the bed, and skip a mirror that faces the bed.

Feng shui prefers a solid wall behind the headboard, and so does common sense: a window at your head means drafts, early light and street noise. If it is the only wall that works, use a tall, solid headboard and heavy curtains, and leave a small gap between the bed and the wall.

Yes. Choose Home Office and the generator places the desk in the commanding position: facing into the room with a view of the door, a solid wall behind the chair and the window to one side. It also works for a kids room or a living room; for the sofa, say in the notes that you want its back to a wall and a view of the entry.

Feng shui is a traditional practice, not a science, and this tool makes no promises about health, sleep, luck or relationships. Many of its bedroom rules match practical design advice, though, so the layouts make sense either way. Bagua maps, element colors and personal directions are not part of what it draws.
